Gallery Makowski is pleased to present Shape of Seeing, a group exhibition bringing together eight artists whose practices examine perception across painting and sculptural form. The exhibition considers how color, gesture, material and narrative shape the way we interpret visual experience, asking not only what we see, but how we see.
Nadia Husty, Terry Lee Nelson and Sherry Shefts anchor the exhibition in abstraction, each approaching the form on distinct terms. Husty’s canvases are immersive and gestural, driven by the physicality of paint and the energy of mark-making. Nelson brings a structural sensibility to abstraction, organizing light and surface into compositions that feel simultaneously ordered and fluid. Shefts works through layered color and texture, translating emotional states into dynamic chromatic fields. Together, their paintings trace a range of commitments to non-objective form, from the visceral to the meditative.
Shape of Seeing reflects the breadth and vitality of contemporary painting and sculpture. Through abstraction, surreal figuration, landscape inflected narrative and the material intelligence of cast form, the exhibition invites viewers into an extended consideration of vision itself, the habits, assumptions and possibilities embedded in the act of looking.
